ELEVATED BASICS, MADE IN MONTREAL: DORSALI

If your wardrobe is full of “basics” that somehow still feel a little uninspired, dorsaLi is the kind of brand that makes you rethink what essentials can actually be. It’s based in Montréal, but the perspective behind it feels much more global—and that’s kind of the point. I discovered dorsaLi while browsing at Toronto’s semi-annual One Of A Kind Show and two styles immediately caught my attention: the Twisted Basic Dress and the Lexington Shirt.

At first glance, everything looks simple. Clean lines, neutral tones, nothing overly loud. But the longer you look, the more you notice the details: a slightly unexpected cut, a fabric that drapes differently than you’d expect, pearlescent flower-shaped buttons- small design choices that make a piece feel considered rather than simply utilitarian. dorsaLi calls this idea “twisted basics”, showcasing how garment styles don’t need to be completed re-invented, just elevated.

Founder Dorsa Babaei has lived and worked across Iran, India, Dubai, and now Canada. There’s a sense of movement that translates into the clothes: they don’t feel tied to one place or one way of dressing. Instead, pieces can shift depending on how you wear them, where you’re going, or even how you’re feeling that day.

Even the brand’s name reflects that personal story: “Dorsa,” meaning pearl, paired with “Li,” a childhood nickname. It feels intimate, but not overly sentimental—just grounded in identity.

What’s refreshing is that dorsaLi isn’t trying to keep up with the pace of traditional fashion. There’s no pressure to constantly drop new collections or chase trends. Everything is produced in small batches in Canada, which naturally slows things down and keeps the focus on quality. Fabrics are thoughtfully sourced—often from Japan and Europe—and there’s a clear intention behind every piece. It’s less about having more options and more about having the right ones.

There’s also a bigger mindset behind it all. dorsaLi leans into the idea that you don’t need a constantly rotating wardrobe to feel put together. Instead, they encourage buying less, choosing better, and actually wearing what you own. Pieces are designed to move with you across seasons, not just fit into one moment (a subtle shift, but one that can change how you think about getting dressed).
