AI-POWERED FASHION BRAND: COUTH STUDIOS

Couth Studios

Founded by Sajna Massey in 2024, Couth Studios is a Toronto-based fashion brand that uses AI to realize fashion collections designed in collaboration with the brand’s community.

Drawing on her experience in retail innovation, Massey’s goal is to bridge the gap between fashion brands and consumers. She saw the industry’s reliance on outdated, wasteful practices first-hand and set out to change it. Couth’s use of AI results in the design of and the production of only what people actually want, creating a more intentional and efficient approach to fashion for modern consumers.

Couth’s garments are edgy, and dare I say, a little punk-rock. With an assortment of 8 styles available in neutral colours, it’s difficult to categorize the brand’s aesthetic. Massey doesn’t have any formal training in fashion design but her engineering background has contributed to the brand’s unconventional approach to product development. Currently, all products listed on their website are pre-order only in efforts to reduce waste as a result of over-producing inventory.

While the use of AI in fashion isn’t novel, Couth Studio’s positioning as an AI-led brand is. Initially designed by AI based on runway trends, the inclusion of community feedback (“creative democracy”) allows customers to feel involved in the development process. In combination with in-person events and launch parties, I can see why Couth is an alluring brand. The only potential draw back could be consumers’ need for immediacy (conflicting with Couth Studios’ 60 day order time).

In scaling the brand, it would be interesting to see whether Couth will monetize consumer trends in anyway, eventually acting as a grassroots trend forecasting agency. Big brands would be willing to pay for customer insight data and Couth could be in a unique position to provide un-tapped feedback.
